SARS Tax Season 2025: Key Dates, Auto-Assessments, and Who Must File
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially announced the opening dates for the 2025 Tax Season. This year’s tax filing period opens in stages, depending on your filing method and taxpayer category.
Important Filing Dates for 2025:
Auto-assessment notifications: Begin from 1 July 2025
eFiling and SARS MobiApp (non-provisional taxpayers): Opens 8 July 2025, closes 21 October 2025
Provisional taxpayers using eFiling: Opens 8 July 2025, closes 20 January 2026
As in previous years, SARS will automatically assess certain taxpayers using third-party data from employers, banks, and other institutions. Those selected for auto-assessment will receive notifications via SMS or email starting 1 July 2025 and are encouraged to accept, edit, or file additional returns if needed.
Who Doesn’t Need to File?
You may not need to file a return if:
Your total income for the year is below the tax threshold,
You earned income from only one employer,
You have no other income sources or deductions to declare.
What Should Taxpayers Do?
Ensure your contact details are up to date with SARS.
Monitor communications for auto-assessment alerts.
Log in to SARS eFiling or the MobiApp from 8 July 2025 to review or submit your return.
