Filing Season Deadline Approaching: Avoid SARS Penalties

With the 2025 Filing Season well underway, GZ & Co. reminds taxpayers that the deadlines are fast approaching. Late or non-submission carries administrative penalties that accumulate month after month.

Deadlines to Remember

  • Non-provisional individual taxpayers: 20 October 2025
  • Provisional taxpayers and trusts: 19 January 2026

The Cost of Missing the Deadline

SARS levies fixed administrative penalties for outstanding returns, ranging from R250 to R16 000 per month depending on your taxable income, and these recur for every month a return remains outstanding. Interest is also charged on any tax not paid on time.

What You Should Do

  • Do not ignore your auto-assessment — review and, if necessary, correct it.
  • Gather your IRP5s, medical certificates, retirement annuity certificates and other supporting documents now.
  • File early to allow time to resolve any queries before the deadline.

Trusts, in particular, face a stricter compliance environment and should not leave submissions to the last minute.

If you need assistance understanding how these developments affect you or your business, GZ & Co. is here to assist.
