SARB Opens 2026 with a Repo Rate Cut

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has begun 2026 with a measured adjustment to interest rates, following its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in late January. The decision offers modest relief to borrowers while signalling continued caution on inflation.

The Decision

The MPC moved the repo rate to 8%, a 25 basis point reduction, bringing down the prime lending rate that banks charge customers. The Bank emphasised that future decisions remain data-dependent, with inflation expectations and global conditions guiding its stance.

What It Means for You

  • Borrowers with home loans, vehicle finance and other variable-rate debt will see slightly lower monthly repayments.
  • Businesses may find the cost of financing marginally more affordable, supporting investment.
  • Savers should note that returns on interest-bearing accounts may soften.

A Reminder on Tax

Interest earned on savings remains taxable above the annual exemption (R23 800 for under-65s, R34 500 for those 65 and older). Keep this in mind when reviewing your investment income for the coming tax year.
